• The Next Moves For Rangers

    What now for Rangers?

The Ellis deal collapsed. Every sceptic who was wondering what the ex-chairman of Northampton Town could bring to Rangers was proved to be correct: absolutely nothing.

Despite those claiming to be in the know, on various Rangers boards, that the deal was done they were completely wrong. As director Dave King has since revealed; the deal was over before it ever began.

In fact, there never really was a deal. All of this bluster of advanced negotiations from the club to the stock market said and proved to be nothing whatsoever.

But what is in store for Rangers now?

Alastair Johnston is the man of the moment. He called Ellis' bluff and it was the correct decision to do so. Really this deal was dead when it hit problems over the area surrounding Ibrox and that was a good three or four months ago.

Big AJ is also a Rangers man. It's easy to feel more confident with him at the helm than the rudderless moonbeam chasing Murray.

Rangers have set up shop for the new season to act as if no change of owner would take place, and thanks to another title win, there is a little room to manoeuvre in the transfer market.

A million problems seem to be resolved as Kirk Broadfoot has signed a new contract. Hopefully we won't be the one's left with egg on our faces.

Boyd is going. There's no reason for him to stay really. He may be a great striker but a great player he refuses to be unless it's under his own terms. He's been quoted as saying that anything else that comes along will be less than Rangers. Well he's made his bed, he had six months to sign a contract, so lie uncomfortably in it.

With one staying, some leaving and many expected to leave who can we bring in to help us win the next championship?

We've apparently been in contact with Jose Goncalves and it could be a good deal. Otherwise on the transfer front we've been consecutively quiet.

Hopefully after the World Cup finishes we can get back to speculating on which players we can bring in rather than which ones we are going to lose.

Given our current financial status it would be ridiculous to expect to sign any real stars of the World Cup but there could be some half decent players that our very own future manager Ally McCoist could be picking up on.

So back to the initial question...who knows. Walter is a man to be trusted and we should have faith in him this season, perhaps more than any other as now the boat seems to be steadying. It does seem strange to say that, after two consecutive titles we should be steady, but we are far from out of the woods.

Whatever Rangers do next we can consider next season to be our greatest challenge.
